Society/Study Groups/Supervision


The Society was formed in response to those professionals across the country who wished to expand their knowledge of the Masterson Approach to Disorders of the Self. The purpose of the Society is to provide a greater continuity of learning and communication.

Membership in the Society offers a semi-annual newsletter which keeps members abreast of current faculty activities, offers thoughtful articles on various aspects of psychotherapy by Dr. Masterson and faculty and includes some thoughts and activites of Society members.

The annual fee is $25.00.

Study Group / Supervision Activities

Study groups led by members of the Institute faculty are available by telephone and on-site. Those interested may also form groups in their geographic area, with one person as liaison with the Institute. The level of the programs will vary with the needs of each group. Study group fees are determined by the size of the group. Continuing education credits are available. These workshops or faculty supervision are especially helpful to those considering the three-year postgraduate training program.

CALIFORNIA (Sacramento)
Faculty member Edna J. Bohannon, Ph.D., West Coast Training Program, leads a study group which meets one Saturday morning each month from 10:00 a.m., until noon. Anyone wishing to join may call Jill Kennedy at (916) 457-1730 or Dr. Bohannon at (510) 351-5271 for fee, location and directions.
 
CALIFORNIA (Walnut Creek)
Faculty member Joseph P. Farley, MFT - new groups starting on Fridays from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. The fee will be $320 per 8 week session (Plus Society of the Masterson Institute membership, $25). For further information or to join the group, please call 925-256-4670, ext #2.

A Masterson Consultation Group in Walnut Creek currently has openings. The Masterson Approach is a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapeutic approach to the treatment of those with Borderline, Narcissistic, or Schizoid Disorders. This approach to treating self-disorders
was developed by pioneer James F. Masterson, M.D., and integrates attachment theory, neuro-affective science, and contemporary developmental theory. Interventions are designed to be empathically attuned to the client's real self. The purpose of the group is to introduce clinicians to the Masterson Approach through assigned readings, group discussions and case presentations by group members. Emphasis is on differential diagnosis and treatment interventions. Group membership is limited to 6 individuals. Sixteen CEU's are available for those members completing 8 sessions.

Joseph Farley, MFT is the Clinical Director of the West Coast Branch of the Masterson Institute for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, a three-year postgraduate training program in Oakland. He is a former adjunct faculty member of JFK University and has given lectures on the Masterson approach for the Wright Institute, Alliant University (formerly CSPP), JFK University, and at the annual meeting of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists. He has authored a chapter on treatment of the Schizoid Disorder of the Self in James Masterson's latest book. Mr. Farley has over 20 years of clinical experience.
